SMEC Foundation has raised more than A$20,000 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan that wreaked havoc in central Philippines on 8 November 2013.
The Philippine office has allocated the bulk of the donation for building new houses and providing livelihood assistance in the form of fishing boats to needy families in calamity-stricken areas, like the town of Manapla and the city of Sagay in Negros Occidental. A number of homeless families in Manapla will benefit from the house construction, while fishing families in Sagay will either get new boats, for those whose boats were completely destroyed by the typhoon, or receive the parts and other materials required to fix their partially damaged boats.
Aa partnership has been initiated between SMEC and Gawad Kalinga, a local foundation, to carry out the housing and boat projects. One noteworthy feature of these undertakings is that the beneficiary families will contribute manual labour to allow them the dignity of having their new house and/or boat earned, not donated. SMEC will monitor the progress of the projects to ensure their timely delivery, according to budget and specifications.
Meanwhile, three SMEC employees whose close relatives were among those whose houses were damaged by the typhoon, have received cheques worth A$500 each from the SMEC Foundation donation to assist their kin in rebuilding their homes.
