Implemented by Self Help Africa and facilitated by our charity partner Action on Poverty (AoP), this project is part of the Home-Grown School Meals Project, supported by the World Food Programme and the Government of the Republic of Zambia. The initiative aims to reduce hunger and enhance nutrition among school students by providing diverse and nutritious food options.

The four beneficiary schools, namely Kansangwa, Mwambanzovu, Nsangano, and Sala primary schools, were carefully selected in Central Zambia. These schools were in dire need of improved kitchen storerooms to enhance nutrition education, school kitchen management, and overall hygiene practices.

Prior to the project, kitchen equipment and food supplies had to be stored in classrooms or even the head teachers’ offices, resulting in operational challenges and compromised hygiene. The construction of these storerooms has alleviated these issues, significantly improving kitchen operations and overall hygiene standards.

With the support of the SMEC Foundation and other stakeholders, these upgrades have had a profound impact on the functionality of the school kitchens and feeding programs at the four participating schools. It is expected that these improvements will positively influence the retention rates and learning outcomes of over 2,500 students, ensuring a conducive environment for their growth and development.

The SMEC Foundation’s continued support and partnership with Action on Poverty have been instrumental in bringing about sustainable socio-economic solutions to communities. By targeting the root causes of poverty and promoting access to essential resources such as food, water, healthcare, and education, they are making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and uplifting communities as a whole.
